Dr. Sarah Elisabeth Gierzynski, 78, of Columbus, formerly of North Vernon passed away at 6:32 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2019, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus.
Born April 30, 1941, in Indianapolis, Sarah was the daughter of Joseph O. Carson II and Mary Elisabeth (Pickler) Carson. She married Terrance “Terry” Gierzynski on August 29, 1993, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon; he survives.
Sarah was a 1958 graduate of North Vernon High School and a 1962 graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington where she received her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in piano performance. She spent many years teaching music to many students. Over the years, she taught at Madison Music Center and played piano for many churches and events. She formerly owned and operated North Vernon Musical Arts Studio, taught music appreciation at Ivy Tech College for several years and played piano at Hanover College.
Sarah was a former member of St. Mary’s Church in North Vernon. She played piano for Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus, was a former member and piano player for North Vernon Presbyterian and North Vernon Methodist Churches; played piano for Jennings County Schools, First Christian Disciples of Christ in Madison and Vancouver, Washington; and was a former member of Jennings County Players and Wednesday Research Club.
In Sarah’s free time, she enjoyed playing piano, music, attending church, sewing and traveling.
Survivors include her husband, Terry Gierzynski of Columbus; son, Hugh (Tiffany) Partridge of North Vernon; daughter, Elisabeth Hegmann of Columbus; and grandchildren, Catherine (Alex) Downs, William Partridge, and Collin Partridge, all of North Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Benjamin Baker and John Hegmann; and sister, Olga Pelance.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon with Rev. Jerry Byrd officiating. Family and friends may call at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon on Monday, December 2, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
Memorials for Sarah may be made through the funeral home to the Jennings County Community Foundation.
