Floyd Strickland Obituary

Floyd Emmett Strickland, 87, of North Vernon passed away at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Greenwood Meadows in Greenwood.

 

Born March 3, 1931 in Jennings County, Floyd was the son of Cecil and Glenna (Wadsworth) Strickland. He married Marilyn Ashton on September 28, 1952 at the First Baptist Church in North Vernon. She survives.

 

Floyd was a 1948 graduate of North Vernon High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He retired as plant manager from Arvin’s in North Vernon after 41 years, Jennings County Water for 5 years and owner of Scipio Grocery for 26 years. Floyd was a member of First Baptist Church in North Vernon, Charter member and Paul Harris Fellow of North Vernon Rotary Club, North Vernon Jaycees, Past North Vernon Library Board member and North Vernon Senior Center, and a former Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed mowing grass and volunteer work.

 

Surviving with his wife Marilyn Strickland of North Vernon; is a son, George (Gretchen) Strickland of Elko, Minnesota; daughters, Diana Sue (Tim) Freidenberger of Columbus, Ohio, Jennifer (David) Carnes of Greenwood; daughter-in-law, Kathy Strickland of Cassopolis, Michigan; brother, James Strickland of North Vernon; sister, Irma (Maurice) Gresham of North Vernon; grandchildren, David B. (Tiffani) Howard of Camby, Lauren (Todd) Borgmann and Bradley (Jennifer) Carnes all of Greenwood, Michael Strickland of Columbus, Mary Strickland of Phoenix, Arizona, Ashton Freidenberger of Columbus, Ohio, Luke Strickland, Emma Strickland and Noah Strickland all of Elko, Minnesota; four great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Strickland; brother, Louis Strickland; and sister, Nettie Noel.

 

A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2019, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service with Bob Ochs, Bill Burnett, and Shari Leake officiating.  You are welcome to visit with the family on Saturday at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the time of celebration.

 

Memorials may be made in honor of Floyd to the Jennings County Library through the Jennings County Community Foundation.
