Harold E. Spurgeon

Harold E. Spurgeon, 81, of Scipio, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at his residence.

Born April 25, 1938, in Freetown, Indiana, he was the son of the late Max and Ruth (Roberts) Spurgeon. He married Elsie Acton on November 12, 1955 in Grammar, Indiana. She preceded him in death on March 4, 2013.

Harold worked at Arvin Industries in Columbus for 47 years and four months. He retired in 2004. Harold enjoyed fishing, bird and squirrel watching, woodworking and learning about Jennings County 100-year history. Harold loved spending time with his family, as well as learning about their history.

He is survived by his children, Robin (Angie) Spurgeon, Rebecca (Sam Wagner) Ray, Roberta (John) West, and Joyce Smith, all of Scipio, Johnathon (Rhonda) Spurgeon of Columbus; siblings, Gerald (Linda) Spurgeon of Scipio, Jerry (Sally) and Maxine Spurgeon, Carolyn (Irvin) Acton and Jean Shirley,  all of Seymour, Marilyn Smith of Vernon, Margaret (Joe) Brannam of Bedford, and Clara Rudolph of Indianapolis; sixteen grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Ruth Spurgeon; his loving wife, Elsie Spurgeon; daughter-in-laws, Brenda and Dorretta Spurgeon; and grandson, Brooks Spurgeon.

A funeral service for Mr. Spurgeon will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with Jim Pursley officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2019 and one hour prior to service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
