Obituary of Helen Grace (Malott) Morin

    Helen Grace (Malott) Morin (89) died at 4:05 AM on 20th, of April, 2019 at her home.

She was born to Glen T. and Nellie C. (Cane) Malott in Dupont, Indiana, where she joined a brother Vern 5 years her senior.  The family moved to the Commiskey area for a short time, then back to Dupont, before settling on a farm in Lovett Township.  She graduated from Paris Crossing High School in 1948.  She attended National College of Education in Evanston, Illinois graduated with a BS degree in 1952 and her Master’s degree in 1957.  She received a teaching scholarship during her senior year of college and did post graduate work at Ball State, Purdue, and Indiana Universities.

    In 1952 she traveled to San Francisco, California to marry her hometown sweetheart Ronald Roe Morin, a serviceman from Commiskey. Indiana. While in California she taught impoverished children preschool age. The couple returned to Jennings county where she taught school for 34 years, serving 2 years in Vernon, and the rest in the elementary schools of North Vernon, Indiana.

    She was a member of the Tea Creek Baptist Church, the National Education Association, the Indiana State Teachers Association, the Jennings County Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gama Association, and Indiana Retired Teacher’s Association.  She was honored to be the 3rd recipient of the Carl Wildey Outstanding Teacher Award and later received the Harry Purkhiser Award in Education.

    She traveled extensively with National Education Association, flying around the world and circled the globe on one of her many trips.   She enjoyed cruising with Viking River Cruises traveling the Baltic to Russia and sailed on the Queen Mary to Europe, touring Europe by car and bus.  In the Caribbean and Mediterranean she sailed with: Canard, Carnival, Princess, Norwegian, Holland American, and Greek Lines.  She traveled the USA and Canada by tent and camper visiting all states and providences, and even backpacking Alaska with her family. No matter how or where she traveled, she would bring the love of learning back to her many students.  After retiring, she volunteered at Graham Creek Elementary School working with the Ethnic Diversity Club and her daughter’s class.

    In conclusion she enjoyed; traveling, camping, bike riding, water aerobics, her home, church, and teaching children.

    She is survived by a daughter, Julie Ann (Morin) Miller, a teacher of 34 years at Graham Creek Elementary School, a son-in-law, Richard Miller and a beloved grandson, Michael Miller, along with nieces, nephews, and other in-laws.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Roe Morin the past principal of Vernon and North Vernon Elementary Schools, her parents, and brother Vern Malott of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

    As requested by the deceased, there will only be a graveside service held in her honor at the Vernon Cemetery Saturday, April 27th, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Philip Elliott presiding.   All are welcome.

    Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon were entrusted with the care of these arrangements.

    Memorials may be made in her honor through the funeral home to Tea Creek Baptist Church or any Hospice.
