James Herbert Gabbard

James Herbert Gabbard, 79, of Dupont passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon.

Born April 27, 1938 in Hazard, Kentucky, Mr. Gabbard was the son of Sidney and Carrie Combs Gabbard. He married Carole Jean Kinnear on December 24, 1962 at the Methodist Church in North Vernon. She preceded him in death on April 22, 2011.

Mr. Gabbard worked the assembly line for Arvin’s in Columbus for 42 years before retiring in 1992. He enjoyed gardening, basketball, softball, playing corn hole and horseshoes.

Survivors include a son, Jeff (Marshetta) Gabbard of North Vernon; daughter, Carla (Kelly) Combs of North Vernon; brother, Sidney (Reba) Gabbard of Vernon; sisters, June (Ray) Franks and Georgia Day both of North Vernon and Marie (Jim) Howell of St. Bernard, Ohio; grandchildren, Jackie Penn, Alison Combs, Shania (Ross) Porter, Jesse Simpson and Sailor Simpson all of North Vernon and Kyle (Tara) Gabbard of Fort Campbell, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, Abigail Penn of Reddington and Ryker Porter of North Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughter, Marsha Whisman; brothers, David, Don, Earl and Elijah Gabbard and sisters, Ruby and Della Gabbard and Betty J. Lanham Gabbard.

A funeral service for Mr. Gabbard will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with the Rev. Dale Boyd officiating. Family and Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, February 5, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery.
