James W. Layman, 80, of Commiskey, passed away at 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at Scott Memorial Hospital in Scottsburg.

Born August 5, 1937 in Owensboro, Kentucky; Mr. Layman was the son of the late James Thomas and Ida Belle Page Layman. He married Ethel Louise Marling Layman on March 1960. She preceded him in death on February 11, 2008.

Mr. Layman worked as a Millwright for Golden Casting in Columbus for 29 years before retiring in 1999. He was a member of Butlerville Mennonite Church in Butlerville and a member of Six Mile Masonic Lodge #412 in Hayden..  Mr. Layman served in the U. S. Army from August of 1955 to August of 1958. He enjoyed fishing and coaching little league baseball at the North Vernon City Park for 20 years.

He is survived by his sons, Phil (Donita) Layman of Commiskey, Ralph (Kim) Layman of Muskegon, Michigan, Jimmie (Vera) Layman of Oscoda, Michigan and Mike Layman of Milroy; daughter, Mary (Jack Gay) Hoevener of Commiskey; brother, Glenn Layman of Tampa, Florida; sister, Betty (Jack) McVey of Louisville, Kentucky; twenty grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, sister, Mary Cecil and sons, Thomas Eugene and Robert Lee Layman.

Private Family Services will be held. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon were entrusted with the care of these arrangements.

Memorials may be made in honor of Mr. Layman to the Six Mile Masonic Lodge #412 through the funeral home.
