Karl Edward Whitaker, 69, of North Vernon, Indiana passed away at 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at his residence.

Karl was born August 29, 1942 in Gunlock, Kentucky the son of Cynthia Wireman Whitaker and the late Thomas Benton “Ben” Whitaker. He married Sherry Smith on September 4, 2004 in Vernon, Indiana. She survives

Karl was a union worker for Millrite Construction for 20 plus years and had previously worked as a coal miner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Bellatrix. He was a 1960 graduate of Salyersville High School in Salyersville, Kentucky. He was a lifetime member of Matt Hester Post #2021, V.F.W. and a trustee and member of Am Vet’s Post #7, and Eagles Club and a member of the American Legion and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed bluegrass and country music, gardening, playing cards and horseshoes, dancing and spending time with his family.  

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Whitaker of North Vernon, Indiana; his mother, Cynthia Whitaker of North Vernon, Indiana; two sons, Thomas Benton (Wendy) Whitaker, III and Brandon Lee Whitaker of Salyersville, Kentucky; one daughter, Lisa K. (Jeff) Dillow of Whiteland, Indiana;  two brothers, Donald E. (Helga) Howard of North Vernon, Indiana, Max D. Howard of Mooresville, Indiana and Alphonso (Denise) Whitaker of Eddyville, Kentucky; two sisters, Gordennell (Richard) Griner of Butlerville, Indiana and Deborah Murphy of North Vernon, Indiana; four grandchildren, Kelsay Richards of Columbus, Indiana, Logan Richards of Greenwood, Indiana, Sara Dillow of Whiteland, Indiana and Olivia and Abigail Whitaker of Salyersville, Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Benton Whitaker; sister, Carlotta Garwood and his grandparents.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2012, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon, Indiana with the Rev. Malvin McCullough officiating. Friends may call at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services from 10:00 a.m.  until time of service.

Memorials may be made through the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services to the V.A. Hospital
