Alberta “Fay” Miller, 78, of Columbus, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2021, at her residence.
Born September 19, 1943, in Newburn, she was the daughter of the late Rawleigh and Viola (Coryell) Mitchell. She married John Miller on October 2, 1971, in Columbus; he preceded her in death on July 3, 1984.
Fay was a 1998 graduate of Sears University where she earned her business degree. She worked in the snack bar for Walmart in North Vernon for three years before retiring in 2008; she had previously worked for the former Sears Store in Columbus where she worked in the menswear and infant departments for five years. She was a former member of the Mormon Church and was attending the First Baptist Church in Taylorville with her son Doug. Fay enjoyed writing to her pen pals, reading, writing poetry, working crossword puzzles, and listening to music.
She is survived by her sons, Douglas (Tom) Mitchell I of Taylorsville, and Basil Miller of Seymour; daughters, Rebecca (Donnie) Waltermire of North Vernon and Sarah Rose (Tim) Jarrell of Taylorsville; stepsons, George and Leroy Miller of Coatesville; stepdaughters, Frankie Miller of Columbus and Julie Wagaman of Morgantown; brothers, Elbert (Pam) Mitchell of English, Max Mitchell of Columbus and Phillip (Heather) Mitchell of North Vernon; sisters, Lois Quillen of Warsaw, Roberta Boat of Muncie, Wanda (Steve) Hacker and Judy (David) Hartwell both of Butlerville, Joyce (Bill) Ashton of North Vernon, Jeannie (Ron) Agee of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Virginia (Bill) Hammond of Westport; grandchildren, Stacy (Andrew) Jarrell of Taylorsville, Tiffany (Tyler) Fields, Douglas (Kayla) Mitchell II, Chris Mitchell, Monica (Michael) Harris, Angie (Trevor) Hyden, Amber (Aaron) Boggs, Brittany (Cecil) Fordice, Donald Joseph “DJ” Waltermire, Michael (Shay) Waltermire and Travis Waltermire, all of North Vernon; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Ivan Mitchell; granddaughter, Rachel McVey and great-grandchildren, Tyler McVey and Carmen Waltermire; stepdaughters, Donna Sue Miller and Ella Black.
A funeral service for Fay will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Burial will follow in the Rush Branch Cemetery in Jennings County.
Memorials may be made in honor of Fay through the funeral home to Bartholomew County Public Library, Jennings County Public Library, or the First Baptist Church in Taylorville.
