Arthur James “Art” Buchanan, 86, of North Vernon, passed away at 7:20 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Lutheran Home in Seymour.
Born September 13, 1938, in Jennings County, he was the son of the late Adrian Cecil and Ruth Esther (Aeschbocker) Buchanan. He married Joye Lue Gregory on March 24, 1957, in North Vernon; she preceded him in death on June 11, 2003.
Arthur was a 1956 graduate of North Vernon High School and served in the United States Navy from May 1956 until July of 1974. After serving he worked at the former Regal Rugs from 1974 until 1980 and then as supervisor for the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville until his retirement in 1999. He also worked as a greeter for the North Vernon Walmart Store. Arthur was a member of the North Vernon Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed being in Orlando, Florida especially attending Disney World and Universal Studios and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his son, James Buchanan of North Vernon; daughters, Mary Jane (Maurice) Harsin of Deputy and Annette (Tom) Phillips of San Diego, California; brother, Mark (Linda) Buchanan of Florida; grandchildren, Jamie Buchanan, Margaret Buchanan, and Odi Grajles, all of North Vernon; Andrea (Heathe) Fletcher and Alyssa Phillips, both of San Diego, California; and great-grandchildren, Aubrey Fletcher and Aiden Fletcher, both of San Diego, California, and Arionna Golden and Brayden Golden, both of North Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brother, Lawrence E. Buchanan; and sister, Naomi Mullikin.
A funeral service for Art will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the North Vernon Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Caleb Reynolds officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will be in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison with military graveside rites.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home in honor of Art to the Ronald McDonald House.
