Athelene Callahan, 93, of Butlerville, passed away at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at her residence.
Born October 1, 1927, in Slemp, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Daw and Vina (Ison) Callahan.
Athelene was a 1946 graduate of Viper High School in Hazard, Kentucky and attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. She worked as a schoolteacher and telephone operator in Kentucky and had worked locally for the former Cardinal Grill in North Vernon. She was a former member of Old Regular Baptist Church in Cornettsville, Kentucky. Athelene enjoyed quilting and sewing.
Athelene is survived by her niece, Elaine (Carl) Shepherd of Butlerville; sisters, Bertha (Lawrence) Duncan of Bedford, Virginia and Stella Crabtree of Dayton, Ohio; and several other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers and their spouses, Coleman and Eloise Callahan and Ernest and Shirley Callahan.
A funeral service for Athelene will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with Gerald Caudill officiating. Family and friends may call at funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
