Bertha (Callahan) Duncan, 87, of Hampstead, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025.
Betha was born on December 14, 1937, in Slemp, Kentucky, the daughter of Daw and Vina (Ison) Callahan.
She graduated from Pine Knott High School in Pine Knott, Kentucky where she went to school with the love of her life and later married her husband of 56 years, Lawrence Duncan; he survives.
Bertha worked for General Motors in Norwood, Ohio for ten years before becoming a stay-at-home grandmother raising her grandkids Michelle and Chris. She enjoyed sewing, making quilts, raising a garden and canning, working TV crossword puzzle books, playing cards, Rook was her favorite. Bertha enjoyed going on trips with her best friend, Sandy Reeves of 60 years. She loved her dog Buddy, cat Sissy and listening to Vince Gill “Go Rest High on the Mountain.”
Surviving with her husband of 56 years, Lawrence; are her children, Elaine (Carl) Shepherd of Butlerville, Leslie (Becky) Duncan of Hempstead, North Carolina; Diane Coleman of Westport, Kenny Walker of Indianapolis, and David Walker of Sommerset, Kentucky; sister, Stella Crabtree of Dayton, Ohio, grandchildren, Shawn (Lisa) Harris of Butlerville, Chad (Kyle) Harris of Boston, Massachusetts, Bethany Duncan and Nathan Duncan, both of North Carolina, Adam Coleman of Westport, Michelle Walker and Chris Walker, both of Greenwood, great grandsons, , Toby Harris, Jordan Gray and Dustin Gray, all of North Vernon; great-great-grandson, Shawn A. Harris of North Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents, brothers, Ernest (Shirley) Callahan, Coleman (Eloise) Callahan; sister, Athelene Callahan; stepson, Stewart Duncan; and a grandson..
A graveside service for Bertha will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025, in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon. Pallbearers will be Carl Shepherd, Shawn Harris, Toby Harris, Michelle Walker, Mike Gilpin, and Trey Gilpin.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home in honor of Bertha to the Dementia Society of America.
