Betty Lou Schumacher, 82, of Elizabethtown, passed away at 2:32 p.m. on Monday, September 18, 2023, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon.
Born April 4, 1941, in Manchester, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late David Lawrence Corum Sr. and Beatrice (Howard) Corum. She married Gerald Eugene Schumacher Sr., on January 30, 1960, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon; he preceded her in death on September 21, 2002.
Betty was a 1958 graduate of North Vernon High School and attended business college. She worked in the cafeteria for Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus for 16 years and had previously worked for Kmart in Columbus, several years with the Floral Gift Shop in North Vernon, and the Cummins Engine Company for two years. She also worked with her late husband from 1977-1983 at their business, Schumacher Motors in North Vernon. Betty was a member of Wilson Chapel Church and the Yayas Girls. She enjoyed animals, cats, and looking at cloud formations in the sky.
She is survived by her sons, Gerald E. (Karla) Schumacher Jr. of Elizabethtown, Kenneth M. Schumacher of North Vernon, and John D. Schumacher of Elizabethtown; her companion, Danny Benningfield of Elizabethtown; brother, Dennis Corum of North Vernon; grandchildren, Dylan Schumacher of Greenwood, Kali (Mikey Neville) Schumacher of Hope, Tyler (Amber) Dust of Auburndale, Florida, and Brittany (Robbie Young) Schumacher of North Vernon; and great-grandchildren, Mylah Neville, Mikey Neville Jr., and Meadow Neville, all of Hope, and Kaden Dust of Auburndale, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brothers, Col. Delbert M. Corum and David Lawrence Corum Jr.
A funeral service for Betty will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Allen Sladek officiating. The visitation with family and friends will be held on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. (noon) until the time of the service at the funeral home.
