Bonnie (Smith) Cardinal

Bonnie Cardinal, 99, of North Vernon passed away at 9:38 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Majestic Care of North Vernon.

Born March 19, 1927, in Hardburly, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Kelly and Rosy Whitt Smith. She married Charles E. Cardinal in Jennings County, on March 12, 1952; he preceded her in death on January 21, 2010.

Bonnie worked as a line worker for ITT Thompson in North Vernon for 20 plus years. She was a former member of the Old Regular Baptist Church in North Vernon. Bonnie enjoyed watching game shows, crocheting, gardening and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her sons, Ernie Cardinal and John Wade, both of North Vernon; daughters, Joyce (Butch) Day, Betty (Tim) Beineke, and Sharon Webb, all of North Vernon; brother, Adam (Noretta) Smith of North Vernon; sisters, Viola Tyler of North Vernon and Wonnie Arnold of Florida; grandchildren, Tina (Chris) Bower, Bonnie Lynn (Larry) Ashman, Nad (Kim) Day, Michelle Logan, Jason (Valerie) McClanahan, Steve (Carrie) Beineke, Missy (Aaron) Brown, and Tiffany (Steven) Wathen, all of North Vernon, Brittany Webb of Kansas, Aam (Alana) Webb of Seymour, and Robert (Tammy) Hempstead and Cheryl Wade, both of Columbus; several  great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughters, Melvie Hempstead and Mae Cardinal; brothers, Ephraim Stanley, Ollie, Frank, Lacy and Ralph Smith; sisters, Jewell Wade, Julia Kehrt and Mabelle Redick; grandson, Doug Day; grandson, Brian Hempstead and Jeremie Cardinal; and granddaughter, Tammy Durham.

A funeral service for Bonnie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Dale Boyd officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. The burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Memorials in honor of Bonnie may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of Jennings County.
