Carol Hartwell Obituary

Carol Jean Hartwell, 82, of Butlerville, passed away at 9:50 a.m. on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born December 26, 1942, in Jennings County, she was the daughter of the late John and Virginia (Juengst) Booher. She married James Russell Hartwell on September 18, 1970, at the First Christian Church in North Vernon; he preceded her in death on March 28, 2007.

Carol was a 1961 graduate of North Vernon High School, during high school she worked for the former Stoner’s Department Store and in 1968 she went to work as a DST attendant for the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville for 37 years before her retirement in 2003. She was a member of the First Christian Church in North Vernon and a 63-year member of North Vernon Chapter #183 Order of the Eastern Star. Carol enjoyed crafts, flower arranging, embroidery, family time and her dog, Dutchess.

Survivors include her children, James Michael (Pam) Hartwell, Melanie C. Adcock, both of Butlerville, Jeanna (Dennis) LeCount of Danville,  Illinois,  Dana Garrett of Zeeland, Michigan and Jeff Spicer of Commiskey; brothers, John (Mary) Booher of Moore Haven, Florida and Mark (Jean) Booher of Hayden; sisters, Carlene Day, Ann (Charles) Paul, and Debbie Booher, all of North Vernon, and Kay Horseley of Hanover; grandchildren, Melanie D. Adcock, Zach Bays, and Hunter Bays, all of Butlerville, James Washburn of Texas, Cole (Misty) Adcock of Columbus, Niki Washburn of Bloomington, Tricia (Michael) Garrett, and Tyler Hartwell, both of North Vernon; and great-grandchildren, Emalee, Gracie, Amelyah, Konnor, and Jacquelyn Adcock, all of Columbus, Mitchy Whitehouse and Josie Petro, both of Butlerville, Everett Irvine of Bloomington and Leelynn Garrett of North Vernon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, Michael Booher and great-great-granddaughter, Ira Jean Connor.

A graveside service for Carol will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025, in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon with Chuck Paul officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be on Friday, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service

Memorials may be made in honor of Carol through the funeral home to the Jennings County Animal Control or Riley Children’s Hospital.
