Cheryl Lynne “Cheri” Carter, 74, of North Vernon, passed away at 11:54 p.m. on Monday, April 5, 2021, at the Lutheran Home in Seymour.
Cheri was born on December 22, 1946, and was the daughter of the late William R. and M. Yvonne (Ricketts) Atkins.
Cheri was a 1965 graduate of North Vernon High School and served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) from 1965 until 1968. She retired as a purchasing agent from the former Regal Rugs in North Vernon. Cheri was a current member of Garden City Church of Christ in Columbus, and a former member of First Assembly of God and First Baptist Church, both in North Vernon. She was a former drag racer and enjoyed watching it along with visiting friends, spending time with her grandchildren, and watching sports.
Cheri is survived by her sons, Greg (Karla) Carter of Branson, Missouri, and Colby (Peggy) Carter of Brownstown; brother, Mark (Cheryl) Atkins of Columbus; grandchildren, Melinda (Darren) Purdy of Greenwood, Casey (Heather) Cockerham of Columbus, Kirtley Carter and Kyle Carter, both of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Erin (Nate Lujan) Benham and Shaffer Stevens, both of Joplin, Missouri; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Denise Atkins.
A funeral service for Cheri will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2021, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Dan Barringer officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery with military graveside rites by members of Matt Hester Post #2021 V.F.W.
Memorials may be made in honor of Cheri through the funeral home to Garden City Church of Christ.
