David Edwin Black Sr., 85, of Indianapolis, passed away at 5:07 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at St. Mary’s Healthcare in Lafayette.
Born April 5, 1938, in Madison, he was the son of the late Wayne Edwin and Flora Louise (Gillespie) Black. He married Martha Ann Cartwright on July 30, 1960, at the North Vernon Presbyterian Church; she preceded him in death on January 9, 2020.
David was a 1956 graduate of North Vernon High School and attended Purdue University. He worked as a CNC operator for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus for 39 years before he retired in 1998. David was a member of Southeast Baptist Tabernacle in Indianapolis. He enjoyed attending church and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his sons, David (Angie) Black II of Moberly, Missouri and Gregory (Dawn) Black of Cumberland, Ohio; daughters, Geri (Paul) Briggs of Lafayette and Lori (Mike) Roberts of Indianapolis; brother, Richard Wayne Black of Madison; grandchildren, Jameson (Corina) Briggs, Evan (Becky) Briggs, and Erika Briggs, all of Lafayette, Zachary (Elizabeth) Briggs of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carlie (Christian) McCluskey of Kansas City, Missouri, Addison (Mitch) Westhues of Moberly, Missouri, Jared Dettra, Lukas Black, and Andrew Dettra, all of Cumberland, Ohio, and Sharayah (Marco) Lopresti of New Philadelphia, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Braxton, Aria, Anniston, Emersyn, E.J., Everett and Emmrich Briggs, all of Lafayette, Annabelle Dettra of Cumberland, Ohio, Johnny, Dixon, and Vivian Lopresti, all of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Julia Briggs of Cincinnati, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
A funeral service for David will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Paul Briggs officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:00 p.m. (noon) until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
Memorials may be made in honor of David through the funeral home to Southeast Baptist Tabernacle in Indianapolis.
