Edwin Lee Smoot

Edwin Lee Smoot, 86, of North Vernon, passed away at 3:52 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Born December 16, 1933, in Hanover, he was the son of Mason B. and Neppie (Hamilton) Smoot. He married Rose Wilder on September 16, 1961, at the Centerville Community Church in North Vernon; she survives.

Edwin was a 1951 graduate of Vernon High School in Vernon and served in the U.S. Army from June 1956 until June 1958. He worked for MCI Telecommunications before retiring in 1995 after 14 years and had worked for Arvin’s and Sears.  Edwin repaired televisions and radios. He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church in North Vernon, Friends of Christ in Seymour and Brownstown, Da Bums Band in Columbus and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Seymour. Edwin enjoyed playing keyboard, violin, and guitar, music, composing music, reading, camping, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Rose Smoot of North Vernon; daughters, Kathleen (Gregg) Mannell of Danville, California, Suzanne Smoot-Randle of Columbus, and Catherine (Jeff) Pratt of Tyler, Texas; grandchildren, Amanda (Steven) Foxworthy of Indianapolis, Grace Mannell of Danville, California, Thomas Mannell of Seattle, Washington, Angelica Alese Rogers, Julia-Claire Randle, and Hallie Rose Randle, all of Columbus, Sarah  Rose Pratt, and Rebekka Joy Pratt, both of Tyler, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Rebekka Smoot Rogers; and sisters, Clara Bel Jones and Rosella Schroeder.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2020, at Centerville Baptist Church in North Vernon with the Rev. Paul Penegar officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, 2020, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Burial will follow in the Centerville Baptist Church Cemetery with military graveside rites by members of Matt Hester Post #2021 V.F.W.
