Elbert Wayne Mitchell, 66, of English and formerly of North Vernon, passed away at 12:39 a.m. on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at Majestic Care of North Vernon.
Born September 21, 1957, in Indiana, he was the son of Rawleigh and Viola (Coryell) Mitchell. He married Pam (Fortner) Gray on December 21, 2011, in North Vernon; she survives.
Elbert was a 1978 graduate of Jennings County High School and retired as a DST in 2005 from Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville after 24 years. He had previously worked for Erler’s Industries in North Vernon for three years and Pallet Shop in Butlerville for one and a half years. Elbert enjoyed fishing, squirrel hunting, and looking for arrowheads.
Surviving with his wife, Pam, are his daughters, Pam Mitchell and Leigh-Ann Mitchell, both of North Vernon; brothers, Max (Kim) Mitchell of Seymour and Phillip Mitchell of Austin; sisters, Lois Quillen of Warsaw, Judy Hartwell and Wanda (Steve) Hacker, both of Butlerville, Roberta Boat of Richmond, Joyce (Bill) Ashton of Kentucky, Evelyn (Ron) Agee of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Virginia (Bill) Hammond of North Vernon; and grandchildren, Elbert W. Mitchell III and Ariel (Ethan Hunt) Mitchell, both of Marengo, Beck Weiss of Paoli, Tim (Amanda Bott) Gordon, Markiah Bowman, and Samuel Bowman, all of North Vernon, Abby (Joey Pennycuff) Ross of Butlerville, Allen (Alex) Dean of Seymour, Destiny Radley of Alabama, Leigh-Ann Mitchell of Kentucky, and Blayne Mitchell of Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Elbert “Bubba” Mitchell II; brother, Ivan Mitchell; and sister, Alberta Miller.
In keeping with his and his family’s wishes, cremation is planned with no services to be held at this time. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon.
Memorials may be made in honor of Elbert Mitchell through the funeral home for expenses.
