Elizabeth M. “Betty” Mays, of New Alexandria, Pennsylvania, passed away on December 26, 2024, at Twin Lakes Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Born December 13, 1936, in North Vernon, she was the daughter of Theodore and Opal (Dupree) Smith.
Elizabeth worked as a waitress, bartender, housecleaner, exercise instructor, landlord, factory worker and ballroom dancer. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shelbyville. Elizabeth enjoyed ice skating, dancing, gardening, gambling, snow skiing, scraping and rebuilding.
Survivors include her sons, Terry Gene Mays of Utah and Brian Lee (Beverly) Mays of Indianapolis; daughters Cindy Lynne Riley of Pennsylvania and Brenda Sue (William) Heywood of Florida; brother, Walter Smith of Vernon; sister, Carol Cummings of North Vernon; grandchildren, Michael (Ashley Hall) Huseman of Shelbyville, Amber Huseman of Florida, Justin (Meg Nero) Mays of Pennsylvania, Ty Mays of Indianapolis, Christopher Wallace of Pennsylvania, Sarah (Dustin) Coons of Princeton, Jocelyn Riley of Pennsylvania, Daniel Barnes and Natasha Mays of Utah, Angela (Galen) Mays of Rushville, Jeremy (Megan) Mays, Alexander Mays, and Mikayla Mays, all of Milroy, Wynter Mays of Indianapolis; great-grandchildren, Trystin Huseman and Jaxon Huseman both of Shelbyville, Unique Huseman, Damon Huseman, and Declan Huseman, all of Florida, Dylan Gaertner-Mays and Evan Delo Mays, both of Pennsylvania, Dakota Coons, Isaiah Coons, Samantha Coons, Bridgit Coons, all of Princeton, Harrison Mays and Dean Mays both of Milroy, Castiel Mays and Danielle Mays, both of Rushville; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Frank Smith; sisters, Anna Stanley, Betty Cloud, Nancy Moore, Ruth Edna, Susan and Rebecca Smith; grandchild, Joshua Mays and great-grandchild, Kaia Mays.
A funeral service for Elizabeth will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with Rev. Frank McGee officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be on Friday, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Kellar Cemetery in North Vernon.
Memorials may be made in honor of Elizabeth through the funeral home to Dementia Society of America or American Foundation for the Blind.
