Helen “Jeanne” James, 68, of North Vernon, passed away at 10:04 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at her residence.
Born September 10, 1955, in Seymour, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Edward and Helen Ruth (Griffin) Pettit. She married John Richard “Hamburger” James on February 2, 2019, at Graham Baptist Church in Butlerville; he preceded her in death on December 16, 2022.
Jeanne was a 1973 graduate of Jennings County High School and a 1996 graduate of Ivy Tech Community College where she earned her nursing degree. She worked as a Registered Nurse for Columbus Regional Hospital, Jennings Health Care and the former Community Care Nursing Home and Muscatatuck State Developmental Center, and as a DST and office staff for the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center. Jeanne was a member and pianist of the Graham Baptist Church in Butlerville. She enjoyed working cross stitch, cooking, reading, playing piano and singing. Jeanne loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughters, Jerianne Bateman, and Andrea Campfield, both of North Vernon; brothers, William “Bill” Pettit of Butlerville and Harry “Ed” Pettit of North Vernon; sister, Karen Ruth (Robert) Alexander of North Vernon; grandchildren, Paige Bateman, and Gavin Bateman, both of North Vernon, Lynn Bateman IV of Columbus, Carmen Smith of Louisville and Monte Smith of Corbin, Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; nephews, Ryan Martin, and Eddie Pettit; and companion, Lowell McClellan.
A celebration of life will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at the Graham Baptist Church in Butlerville with the Rev. David Wallace officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
Memorials may be made in honor of Jeanne through the funeral home to Graham Baptist Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
