James W. Miller, 74, of Elizabethtown, passed away at 8:03 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2024, at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus.
James was born on August 11, 1950, in Columbus, he was the son of the late Edward and Kathleen Elizabeth (Houk) Miller. He married Phyllis J. Rayburn on November 17, 1973, in Columbus; she survives.
James was a 1968 graduate of Jennings County High School and worked in maintenance for Wal-Mart in Columbus for 20 years before retiring in 2024. He had previously worked as a manager at Hanger 5 restaurant in Columbus for several years and in sales and delivery for Columbus Wholesale Grocery for several years. James was a member of Monday Night Church League Bowling in Columbus and Grayford Road Community Church. He enjoyed bowling, studying the Bible, cutting trees and firewood, helping others, and being a jokester.
Surviving with his wife, Phyllis, are his sons, James (Glenda) White of Columbus and James Miller of Elizabethtown; his daughters, Susan (Tim) Poer and Christy Land, both of North Vernon, Vicki (Brian) Mcllwain of Columbus, and Lori Miller of Elizabethtown; sister, Mary Ellen (Rick) Newby of Columbus; grandchildren, Gaige Poer, Kindra Irwin, Nick DuLong, and Jasmyn Horn, all of North Vernon, Brittany Land, Stephanie (Chris) Johnson, Bridget Stepper, and Clayton Smith, all of Columbus, and Emily (Seth) McLaughlin and Joseph (Andi) DuLong, both of Seymour; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Bob Land.
A funeral service for James will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Tim Poer officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
Memorial donations may be made in honor of James through the funeral home to the Grayford Road Community Church.
