James Edward "Jim" Broughton

James Edward “Jim” Broughton, 73, of Vernon, passed away at 4:08 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus.

Born December 21, 1949, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of the late Edward and Alpha Mae (Terry) Broughton.

Jim was a 1968 graduate of North Vernon High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in psychology and English. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War Era. Jim retired as a Probation Officer from Howard County. He was a published author. Jim was an early American history enthusiast and enjoyed reading. He also liked to collect and restore antiques to use in his 1817 home.

Survivors include his son, Jayson (Yulia) Broughton of Moscow, Russia; daughter, Samantha of San Francisco, California; sister, Sandy Downs of Vernon; sister-in-law, Dawn Broughton of Crawfordsville; grandchildren, Rowan, Lukas, Sasha, and Marcus; several nephews and nieces; his dog, Duke; and lifelong friends, David, Connie, and Susan.

He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife, Joyce Broughton; brother, Ray Broughton; an infant brother; and sister, Mary Martin.

A graveside service will be held for Jim at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, in the Vernon Cemetery with military graveside rites by members of Matt Hester Post #2021, V.F.W. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Memorials may be made in honor of Jim through the funeral home to the donor’s choice of organization.
