Jimmy Asher Obituary

Jimmy Ray Asher, 79, of Scipio, passed away at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at his residence.

Born July 28, 1944, in Hazard, Kentucky, he was the son of the late William and Zola (Sturgill) Asher. He married Christine Dixon on December 25, 1967, in Blackey, Kentucky; she survives.

Jimmy was a 1964 graduate of Leatherwood Kentucky High School and attended welding school in Louisville, Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967. Jimmy worked as a mechanical journeyman for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus for 31 years before retiring in 1999. He was a member of Scipio Presbyterian Church, Fish Creek Long Rifles, and Jennings County Historical Society. Jimmy enjoyed motorcycles, fishing, gardening, mushroom hunting, and Pontoon Boat cruising on Norris Lake.

Surviving with his wife, Christine, are a son, Todd Asher of North Vernon; brothers, Jerry (Barbara) Asher of Viper, Kentucky and Edward Asher of Jeff, Kentucky; sister, Rosetta (Colson) Cornett of Slemp, Kentucky; grandchildren, Jacob Asher, Katie Asher, Isaiah Asher, all of North Vernon; great-granddaughter, Makala Asher of North Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Dixon Asher; and sisters, Joann Asher, and Shirley Asher.

A funeral service for Jimmy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with Rev. Anna Walker officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. The burial will be at a later date in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon, with military graveside rites by members of Matt Hester Post #2021 V.F. W.

Memorials may be made in honor of Jimmy through the funeral home to Jennings County Historical Society, Scipio Presbyterian Church, or Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana.

Pappy spent his life sharing his kind, gentle and loving presence with all who knew him. He was an amazing human being.
