Johnnie Frances (Walls) Miles

Johnnie Frances Miles, 88, of Columbus, passed away at 9:37 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Born January 4, 1935, in Lothair, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Herschel and Marie (Minniard) Walls. She married Dr. Harry Lee Miles PhD on October 13, 1951, in Seymour; he preceded her in death on December 25, 2010.

Johnnie attended North Vernon High School and received her bachelor’s degree and her master’s degree in education from Indiana University. She was a teacher at Graham Creek Elementary School in Commiskey for 23 years. Johnnie was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and a former member of the Indiana State Teachers Association. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, cats, traveling, camping, and taking walks.

Survivors include her sons, David Miles of Greenwood, and Mike (Diana) Miles and Dan Miles, both of Columbus; her daughters, Sherry (Kevin) Goen of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Terri (Richard) Lauer of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Susan Edwards of Duggar; grandchildren Leah Rodgers of Memphis, Tennessee, Jenna (Marcin) Kaganek of Nashville, Andrew Goen of Columbus, Ashley (Dallas) Martin of Missoula, Montana, Danny Miles of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tom Miles of Bloomington, Michelle Miles of Omaha, Nebraska, Amy Miles of Seymour, Sam Lauer of Kansas City, Missouri, Ben Lauer of Boulder, Colorado, and Joe VanAlstyne of Duggar; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her granddaughter, Jessie Vanalstyne.

A funeral service for Johnnie will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Frank McGee officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Memorials may be made in honor of Johnnie through the funeral home to the Bartholomew County Humane Society.
