Marion Rice, 90, of Commiskey, passed away at his home on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 4:29 p.m.
Born January 30, 1933, in Perry County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Jeff and Jennette (Couch) Rice. He married Dorothy Jean Bibb on April 14, 1956, in Crothersville; she preceded him in death in 2020.
Marion served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. He worked as a supervisor at Cummins Engine Company for 26 years before his retirement and at AutoZone in Seymour for 11 years. He was commissioned as Kentucky Colonel, was a former member of the Coffee Creek Conservation Club, and helped to build the United Christian Church in Paris Crossing. Marion was well known for his banjo playing and was known as “The Hoosier Banjo Man.” He was also a marksman and loved skeet shooting, squirrel hunting, fishing, antique tractors, and playing music.
He is survived by his sons, John Alan (Trish) Jones of Seymour, Mark (Lillie) Rice of Commiskey, and Kyle (Kayla) Coleman of Vernon; daughters, Charlotte Rice of Commiskey, Elaine Fraser of Butlerville, Marcia Fleetwood of North Vernon, and Wanda (Michael) Wooddell of Corydon; sister, Frances Snivley of Ohio; grandchildren, Michael (Cathy) Fleetwood, Jonah Jones, Sarah Jones, and Xander Jones, all of Seymour, Camia Fleetwood of North Vernon, Sam Fraser of Butlerville, Cody (Shannon) Ramey, Calli Ramey, and Brandon Bowerly, all of Commiskey, Stacie (Jay) Germain of Louisville, Kentucky, Zach Wooddell of Corydon, and Shaylee Smith, Shaedon Smith, Ashton Smith, Amirah Smith, and Ryan Mann, all of Vernon; eighteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Robert, Pearl, and Amerida “Mike” Rice; sisters, Carrie Roberts, Patsy Williams, and Nettie Barger; grandchild, Forrest Rice; and son in-law, Lewis Fraser.
A funeral service for Marion will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 9, 2023, at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with Rev. Dan Corbin officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Hayden Cemetery with military graveside rites by Matt Hester VFW Post #2021 in North Vernon.
Memorial donations in honor of Marion may be made through the funeral home to the Forrest Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the Parkinsons’s Foundation.
