Martha Jane Mathews, 91, of Madison, formerly of Butlerville, passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, November 10, 2023, at River Terrace Assisted Living in Madison.
Born October 18, 1932, in Butlerville, she was the daughter of Theodore “Ted” and Edna (Huelson) Murphy. She married Edgar A. Mathews on March 23, 1951, in Vevay, Indiana; he preceded her in death on May 2, 2013.
Jane was the Postmaster for the Butlerville Post Office and worked for the Postal Service for 30 plus years before retiring. She was a farmer’s wife and helped Edgar run the farm. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Vernon, Three Corners Club, and Jennings County Extension Homemakers Club. Jane enjoyed riding motorcycles, playing cards, playing Bingo, bowling, gardening, and flowers. She loved animals and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her son, David “Dave” (Deb) Mathews of Columbus; daughter, Susan (Eric) Hoffman of Pendleton, Kentucky; sister, Linda (Max) Banning of Leland, North Carolina; grandchildren, Makenzi (Chase) Hunter of Lagrange, Kentucky, Sydney (Kyle) Holnagel of Pendleton, Kentucky, Ryan (Liz) Mathews of Indianapolis, and Keenan (Cassie) Mathews of Bloomington; great-grandchildren, Della Hunter, Casen Hunter, Callie Jane Holnagel, Tanner Holnagel, Valerie Mathews, Rhett Mathews, and Cameron Mathews; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Edgar Dean Mathews; brother, Joe Murphy; and sister-in-law, Peggy Murphy.
A funeral service for Jane will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2023, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with Bob Ochs officiating, The visitation for family and friend will be on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
Memorials in honor of Jane may be made through the funeral home to the donor’s choice of organization.
