Mary Louise Burkman, 98, of Scipio, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at 7:44 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Vivera Senior Living in Columbus.
She was born April 27, 1928, in Scipio, the daughter of the late Wallace A. and Madge M. (Perry) Hines. She married Charles Walter Burkman on July 31, 1948, in Columbus; he preceded her in death on July 27, 2012.
Mary, affectionately known as Mammy, Momma, Mauzy, Mommy and Friend to those who knew and loved her, was a homemaker. She worked for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, was an Avon Representative and worked for the former North Vernon Shoe Mart. Mary and Charles were founding members of Crossroads Community Church and attended Alert Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, working word search puzzles, quilting, sewing, painting, coloring, needlepoint and wood working. Mary was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds.
In 2021, Mary went to live in Columbus at Vivera Senior Living. They had a ribbon-cutting ceremony at her apartment door on her first day. She soon began to make new friends and participate in various activities. She quickly became a favorite of residents and staff as well. One of Mary’s most endearing traits was keeping baskets of candy on her table for her helpers, friends, and visitors. She even felt compassion for a few gentlemen in the dining room and began taking candy to them every evening meal.
Our family cannot adequately express how thankful we are for the excellent care and all the love Mary received at Vivera. We added assistance from Gentiva Hospice during her last week. They worked hand in hand with Vivera staff so she could remain in her apartment. Many thanks to them for their compassion and care during the last difficult days.
She is survived by her son, Mike (Barb) Burkman of Scipio; her daughters, Sherry Burkman of Scipio and Debbie Rust of Cortland; grandchildren, Dusty (Amy) Burkman, Tonya Ryker, Josh (Autumn) Burkman, Amanda (Todd Loy) Jackson, Beth (Mike) Albert, and Rachel (Justin) Amos; great-grandchildren, Luke Jackson, Lainey Jackson, Spencer Parrish, Peyton Spivey, Preston Heyne, Paxton Steward, Jerod Palmer, Samuel Burkman, Rhett Burkman, Kinley Burkman, Avery Perkinson, Bayla Burkman, Max Burkman, Alex Cook, Xavier Jahrries, Jocelyn Jahrries, and Corbin Jahrries; and great-great-grandchildren, Everleigh Jean Spivey, Brinley Ann Spivey, and Gunner Vest.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Wallace H., Clyde W. and James W. Hines; son-in-law, Delbert Rust, sisters-in-law, Edith Louise Hines and Marybelle Hines.
A closing prayer for Mary will be given at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. The visitation with family and friends will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Private burial will be in the Scipio Cemetery.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the Scipio Geneva Fire and Rescue.
