Mary DeEtt Smith, 73, of North Vernon, passed away at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon.
Born September 28, 1951, in Shelbyville, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Barbara (Bowlus) Bennett.
Mary was a 1969 graduate of Jennings County High School and worked as a DST for the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville before retiring and going to work in Community Mental Health Care in Lansing, Michigan for 20 years; she then returned to work at Muscatatuck until they closed. She worked for a total of 20 years at Muscatatuck. Mary was a member of the Friends of Muscatatuck. She enjoyed reading books, photography, and riding horses and on the back of motorcycles. She was a I.U. Fan and loved wildlife especially going to the Muscatatuck Wildlife Refuge.
Survivors include her sons, Jason “Mike” (Deanna Mull) Everage of North Vernon and James (Angela Hollin) Everage of Seymour; brother, Vaughn Bennett of San Francisco, California; sisters, Kathy (Jason) Byalick of Lisbon, Portugal, and Dawn (Tim) Sinkes of Phoenix, Arizonia; and grandchildren, Andrew Everage-Scheible, Elias Everage, Madelynn Burton, and Cadence Burton, all of Seymour, Ross Mull of North Vernon, and Serenidy Cockerham of Indianapolis. .
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Eddie “Tink” Bennett.
A funeral service for Mary will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. The visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
