Nelson Eugene Sumner, 92, of Butlerville, passed away at 1:50 a.m. on Saturday, December 26, 2020, at The Waters of Scottsburg in Scottsburg.
Born July 11, 1928, in Seymour, he was the son of Sherman Earl and Verna Marie (Berry) Sumner.
Nelson retired from the Seymour Fire Department, where he had worked from 1952 until 1972; he had previously worked for the former Spray Sand and Gravel in Seymour for 20 years. He enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing, woodworking, and traveling in a motorhome.
He is survived by his sons, Earl Eugene Sumner of Kingman, Arizona, Kenny (Paula) Sumner of Bargersville, and Michael (Natalie) Sumner of Seymour; daughters, Verna (Richard) Harder of Campbellsburg, Teresa Shirley of McDonna, South Carolina, and Brenda Clark of Seymour; grandchildren, Alan Dixon of Campbellsburg, Adam Shirley of McDonna, South Carolina, Marissa Reynolds, Johnny Reynolds, Vickie (Brad) Procter, Makayla Sumner and Teresa Clark, all of Seymour, Zachary Sumner of New Albany, Bradley Sumner and Katelyn Sumner, both of Osgood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kimberly Reynolds; grandsons, Brian Sumner, Bradley Sumner, and Timothy Wayne Dixon; brothers, Fred and Richard Sumner; and sister, Virginia Fitch.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Jennings County. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon.
Memorials may be made in honor of Nelson through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society.
