Obituary

Ray E. Taylor, 80, of North Vernon, passed away at 2:43 p.m. on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon.

Born June 15, 1941, in Jay County, he was the son of Burle Edwin and Mary Esther (Rough) Taylor. He married Sandy Hawk on July 4, 1982, in Laurel Falls, Tennessee; she survives.

Ray was a 1959 graduate of Poling High School in Jay County and was ordained by Colorado Springs Extension – Nazarene Church. He worked in the machine shop for International Harvester in Fort Wayne for 32 years retiring in 1994. He was a member and Pastor of the North Vernon Nazarene Church for four years and Osgood Nazarene Church 2004-2018. Ray enjoyed motorcycles, pastoring, fishing, hunting and spending time with his kids and church kids.

Surviving with his wife, Sandy, are sons, Steven (Brenda) Taylor of Greenfield, Hugh (Dawn) Taylor of Hartford City and Steve Surface of Greenwood; daughters, Laurel (Troy) Thompson of North Vernon, Pam (Michael) Helgesen, of Heltonville,  Tina (Rick) Bailey of Greenfield, Jacque “Twink” (Eric) McClellan of Hartford City, and Tonya (Russ) Burchard of North Webster; brothers, Larry Taylor of Poneto, Terry (Carol) Taylor and Mark (Suzanne) Taylor, both of Hartford City; brother in-law, Bob Bothast of Montpelier; sisters, Nancy Pryor of Hartford City and Sherry (Myron) Love of Montpelier; eighteen grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Taylor; sister, Susan Bothast; and brother in-law, Mike Pryor.

A funeral service for Ray will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, November 22, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Memorials in honor of Ray may be made through the funeral home to Metavivor (Metastatic Breast Cancer Research, Support and Awareness).
