Richard Dean “Rick” Melton, 68, of North Vernon, died August 19, 2021, at his residence.
Born August 19, 1953, in Seymour, he was the son of Russell and Carol (Compton) Melton. He married Mary Pettigrew in 2007 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee; she survives.
Rick graduated from Seymour High School in 1971 and went on to work as a social worker for the State of Indiana, working at Muscatatuck State Developmental Center, Richmond, and Madison Hospitals for a total of 34 years before his retirement. He had formerly volunteered for the Holton Fire Department for 20 years and was a member of the Jennings County ARC (Amateur Radio Club) in North Vernon. He enjoyed ham radios and watching the I.U. and Colts teams play sports.
He is survived by his wife; son, Samuel (Amy) Melton of Lawrenceburg; daughter, Rachael Curl of Holton; stepdaughter, Tara Losey of Butlerville; brother, Russell Thomas (Kay) Melton of Seymour; and grandchildren, Carter Melton and Elizabeth Melton, both of Lawrenceburg, Samantha Curl and Hayden Curl, both of Holton, and Arebella Losey, Olivia Losey, and Liam Lovins, all of North Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Private family services will be conducted. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service was entrusted with the care of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made in honor of Rick through the funeral home to Jennings County ARA, the local ham radio club or the Schneck Medical Center Hospice.
