Robert Eugene “Bob” Pettit Sr., 91, of North Vernon, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus.
Born June 26, 1929, in Jefferson County, he was the son of Harry Clifford and Ruth Aldine (Gunnion) Pettit. He married Mary Louise Wilson on July 3, 1950, at the Graham Baptist Church in Jennings County; she preceded him in death on March 15, 2016.
Bob was a 1947 graduate of Central High School in Madison and served in the National Guard 1948-1950. He worked vehicle maintenance for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, retiring in 1988 after 37 ½ years. Bob was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he once served as deacon. He enjoyed fishing, walking, attending church, and watching I.U. sports and the Indianapolis Colts. He was a 52-year season ticket holder for the Jennings County High School Panther Basketball Team.
Survivors include his children, Robert Eugene (Ruth Ann) Pettit, Jr. of North Vernon, Timothy Wayne (Cecile) Pettit of Columbus; and Marcha Ann Pettit of North Vernon; brother, Dale Pettit of Seymour; sister, Marilyn Estell of Columbus; grandchildren, Christina Dawn (Derk) Napier of Madison, Angela Kay (Scott) Franklin of Dickson, Tennessee, Andrew (Naomi) Pettit of Lewisport, Kentucky, Logan James (Rachael) Pettit of Caro, Michigan and Tyler Scott Pettit of Columbus; step-grandchildren, Christin (Patrick) Hayden of Indianapolis, Emily (Lee Pollert) Darlage of Seymour and Bryce Darlage of Columbus; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, two infant sons; and brothers, John and Ralph Pettit
A funeral service for Bob will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. August 21, 2020, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Leon Turner and Rev. Ricky Persons officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2020, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Hoosier Hills Baptist Camp, Bethel Baptist Church and Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana.
