Stanley Cortez Spears

Stanley Cortez Spears, 88, of North Vernon, passed away at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Robley Rex V.A. Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

Born July 27, 1932, in Casey County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Ira B. and Ora (Watson) Spears. He married Rita Spears on December 18, 1999 at the Tea Creek Baptist Church in North Vernon; she survives.

Stanley served in the U.S. Army and worked as a machinist for Industrial Machine in Hayden, I.T.T. Steel, and Decatur Mold, both in North Vernon. He was a member of the Restoration Fellowship Church in Butlerville, a lifetime member of the AmVets Post #7 and the Matt Hester VFW Post 2021, both in North Vernon, and a former member of the American Legion in Seymour and the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge, both in North Vernon. He enjoyed golf, bowling, softball, gardening, and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Spears of North Vernon; sons, Steve (Vera) Spears of Crittenden, Kentucky and Jeffrey (Tina) Downs of North Vernon; daughter, Annette (Richard) Roney of Scipio; brothers, Lewis (Peggy) Spears and Tom (Wilma) Spears, both of Somerset, Kentucky, and Dale (Linda) Spears of Yosemite, Kentucky; sisters, Stella Walker and Mary Lou Arnette, both of North Vernon, and Freeda Wesley of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Adam Roney and A.J. (Kristie) Roney, both of Scipio, Devin Downs, Zachary (Marly) Mullikin, and Samantha Downs, all of North Vernon, Micaela Downs of Westport, Teri Schwerman of Rising Sun, Carolyn (Dustin) Wilson of Wilmington, Ohio, and Billy Stewart of Dry Ridge, Kentucky; eleven great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Roger Spears; brothers, Homer, Delbert, and Willis Spears; and sisters, Norma Jean Taylor and Beulah Denham.

A funeral service for Stanley will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery with VFW graveside rites.

Memorials may be made in honor of Stanley through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society.
