Stephen Harold Bertram, 83, of North Vernon, passed away at 9:39 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Born August 10, 1941, in Madison, he was the son of the late Harold Edward and Martha Jane (King) Bertram. He married Cathy Stevens on September 26, 1965, in Columbus County, North Carolina; she survives.
Stephen attended North Vernon High School and served in the United States Marines from 1958 until1968, where he was a Drill Instructor for two years. He was the owner of Hall Heating in North Vernon for 50 plus years. Stephen was a member of the North Madison Church of Christ in Madison, Jennings and Jefferson County Jail Ministry, and hosted regular Bible Studies with family and friends on a daily basis. He enjoyed hunting, target shooting, riding his tractor and farming, gardening and being outdoors.
Surviving with his wife 59 years, Cathy, are his sons, William (Missy) Bertram and Leroy (Carleena) Bertram, both of North Vernon; daughter, Melissa (Mark) Whicker of North Vernon; brother, Joseph Bertram, Stewart Bertram, and Eddie Edwards, all of North Vernon; sister, Linda (Larry) Patrick of North Vernon; grandchildren, Stephen (Nikki) Bertram, Allie (Derek) Stewart, Hanah Bertram, Carleesa (Wyatt) Clendenning, Leroy Bertram Jr., Heather (Michael) Rayburn and Logan (Ashley) Whicker, all of North Vernon, and Evan (Haley) Bertram, of English; and great-grandchildren, Jason Bertram, Bailey Bertram, Mason Wilkerson, Grayson Regan, Delaney Rayburn, Macy Whicker, Lilli Whicker, Everleigh Whicker, Tinley Clendenning, Rustyn Clendenning, and Alea Stewart, all of North Vernon, Elliot Bertram of English
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dennis Bertram
A memorial service for Stephen will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon. The visitation for family and friend will be on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service.
