Velma Irene Boardman, 88, of North Vernon, passed away at 7:42 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2020, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.
Born February 19, 1932, in Jefferson County, she was the daughter of Emerson Otto and Georgia Ester (Sorel) Simmons.
Velma was a 1952 graduate of Paris Crossing High School in Paris Crossing. She worked 32 years for the Madison State Hospital in Madison from 1964 until 1997; starting as cook and at the time of her retirement she was a supervisor. Velma was a member of Coffee Creek Baptist Church in Paris Crossing and held various jobs with the church through the years. She enjoyed fishing, listening to music especially bluegrass and country gospel; watching NASCAR and any type of racing, flowers, gardening, cooking, visiting friends; she was an avid I.U. fan.
Survivors include her son, Randy (Janet) Boardman of North Vernon; grandchildren, Tina (Bryan) Gresham of Hayden, Robert (Sara) Boardman of Scipio and Sara (Aaron) Kovacich of North Vernon; great-grandchildren, Lainey Gresham and Amilia Gresham, both of Hayden, Halle Boardman and Kylee Boardman both of Scipio, Aida Kovacich, Sylvia Kovacich, and Brennan Kovacich, all of North Vernon; and niece Karen Sue (Rusty) Mitchner of North Vernon and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Jean Owens, Dorothy Corya, Anita Ashpaugh, Joy Owens, Betty Ruth Simmons and Vada Arsdale.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 9, 2020, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with Roger James officiating. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Burial will be in the Coffee Creek Christian Church Cemetery.
