Virgil Cornett, 71, of North Vernon, passed away at 11:05 a.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Hickory Creek of Madison.
Born April 24, 1954, in Whitesburg, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Vinson and Pauline (Banks) Cornett. He married Jackie Rodgers on September 14, 1991, in North Vernon; she survives.
Virgil was a 1972 graduate of Madison High School and worked in sales, design and delivery for Goecker Construction in North Vernon for 30 plus years, retiring in 2020. He enjoyed fishing, watching UK Basketball and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Surviving with his wife of 34 years, Jackie, are sons, Kevin (Carolina) Cornett of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Derek (Erin) Green of North Vernon and Mikey (Becky) Cornett of Milton, Kentucky; daughters, Paula (Brent) McMillan of Seymour and Kristin (Alex) Getchell of Franklin; sisters, Mildred (Charles) Schultz and Brenda (Jim) Speer, both of Dupont; brother-inlaw, Jim (Tammy) Rodgers of Madison; and grandchildren, Brianna Cornett and Caleb Cornett, both of California; Alexis Goodman of Kentucky, Austin Cornett, Bentley Bennett, and Arbor McMillan, all of Seymour, Keegan Green and Rylee Green, both of North Vernon, Luke Getchell of Franklin, Christopher Cornett, Justin Cornett, and Corey Cornett, all of Milton, Kentucky, Matthew Lawrence of Tennessee and Caitlyn Bunton of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Maria Combs Cornett Lewis; son, Christopher Michael Cornett; and brother Randy Cornett.
A funeral service for Virgil will be at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Rev. Mike Shipley officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. The burial will follow in Dupont Cemetery in Dupont.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home in honor of Virgil to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
