Virgil Loper Obituary

Virgil Francis “Butch” Loper, 78, of Scipio passed away at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

Born on November 11, 1946, in Bartholomew County, he was the son of the late Francis and Wyvonne (Oliver) Loper.

Butch was a 1964 graduate of Columbus High School and served in the United States Army from 1966 until 1972. He went to work on February 11, 1969, as a troubleshooter at the Tech Center for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, working there 47 years and eight months until his retirement on November 30, 2016.  Butch was a former member of Columbus Cart Club and Moose Lodge, both in Columbus. He enjoyed doing tractor pulls and working on cars and engines.

Survivors include his daughter, Angela (Jeff) Turner of Scipio; his companion, Alvinia “Tinker” Bledsoe of Scipio; brother, Rick (Debbie) Loper of Burnsville; sister, Sherry (Dean) Henderson of Columbus; grandchildren, Shelby (Dylan) Mounce of Columbus; and great-grandchildren, Grayson, Gavin, Wyland and Delaney Mounce, all of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Francis “Kyle” Loper.

In keeping with his and his family’s wishes, cremation is planned with no service to be held at this time. Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service was entrusted with the care of arrangements.

Memorials may be made in honor of Butch through the funeral home to Veterans Suicide Prevention.
