Obituary

Walter Edward Dean, 82, of Columbus, passed away at 3:07 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Fresenius Kidney Care in Franklin after being on kidney dialysis for five years.  

Born June 15, 1941, in Scipio, he was the son of Norman E. and Iva Pearl (Stinson) Dean. He married Elizabeth “Liz” Everroad on May 21, 1996, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; she survives.

Walter graduated from North Vernon High School in 1959 and attended Indiana Business College. He worked at the Fuel Systems Plant for Cummins Engine Company for 40 years before retiring in 2004; after retirement, he worked part-time for AutoZone. Walter was a founding member of Bible Church in Columbus where he served in many areas of the church and was also a member of Diesel Workers Union. He enjoyed spending time with his family, attending his grandchildren’s activities and sports, being an active member of the church and attending church functions, and going to White Castle. Walter was a lifelong fan of IU Basketball, NFL Cleveland Browns, and the Cincinnati Reds Baseball. He was loved by so many and a friend to all.

Surviving with his wife Elizabeth “Liz” Dean, are his son, James E. (Kim) Dean of New Palestine; daughters, Tina Wallace of Hope and April Moss of Columbus; sister, Norma Jean (Morris) Wildey of North Vernon; brother-in-law, Mark Davis of New Albany; grandchildren, Tyler Dean and Nicholas Dean, both of New Palestine, Kortney Wallace, Kolton Wallace, and Kylee Wallace, all of Hope, and Dustin (Ashlie) Michael and Miley Moss, both of Columbus; great-grandchild, Henry Michael of Columbus; lifelong friends, Kenny and Pam Nichols of Greenwood; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Peggy Lou Newland and Beverly Sue Davis.

A funeral service will a conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 3, 2023, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North Vernon with the Reverend Jerry Day Sr., Reverend Dave Marvin and Reverend Rod Ninor officiating. The visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A burial will follow in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Memorials may be made in honor of Walter through the funeral home to the National Kidney Foundation, American Heart Association, Palliative Care of Columbus, or Bible Church of Columbus.
