Lilian Rose Hall Carmer, 73, of rural Dupont died at 5:22 a.m., Sunday, December 20, 2009 at Hospice of South Central Indiana In-Patient Facility in Columbus, Indiana. Mrs. Carmer was well known in the community and had worked at the North Vernon Plain Dealer and Sun for over fifty-two years. At the time of her death she was Assistant Editor, with specific responsibilities for the Court House News and the One Hundred Years Ago column. She was formerly employed by the Jefferson Proving Grounds. Born March 28, 1936 in Jefferson County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Perry and Florence Merle Buchanan Hall. She married William Franklin Carmer on June 6, 1953 at the Vernon Presbyterian Church Parsonage. He preceded her in death on September 17, 1997. Survivors include three nieces, Cheryl Randy Boggs, Connie Michael Ochs, and Diana Tom Taylor, all of North Vernon and numerous extended family members. Mrs. Carmer was an active member of the Graham Baptist Church of San Jacinto. She was instrumental in forming the Jennings County Preservation Association and the movement of the Walnut Grove School to the Muscatatuck County Park. A holder of numerous awards from the National Newspaper Association and the Women's Press Club of Indiana, she was active and held various offices in the Jennings County Historical Society, the Clionian Society, the Republican Women, the Jefferson Proving Ground Preservation Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and other organizations. She served on the Jennings County Alcohol and Tobacco Board and Historic Hoosier Hills. She was a graduate of Dupont High School, in Dupont, Indiana. Mrs. Carmer had an active and inquisitive mind with special interests in photography, historic preservation, genealogy, fishing, gardening, and animal rescue. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Audrey Brown Her funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Harting and Richard L. Burcham, officiating, Tom Taylor will deliver eulogy. Calling is from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery. Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Graham Baptist Church or Mercy Rescue & Adoption, Inc...
