Betty Jean (Powell) Williams

Betty Jean Williams, 94, of North Vernon, passed away at 10:22 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Premier Health Care in North Vernon.

Born June 29, 1923 in North Vernon, Mrs. Williams was the daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Parker Powell. She married James B. Williams on September 6, 1952 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1991

Mrs. Williams was a 1941 graduate of Vernon High School and worked in Medical Records for the former Muscatatuck State Developmental Center in Butlerville before retiring.  She was a member of New Freedom Baptist Church, the Quilt Club, and the Business Professional Women’s Club, all in North Vernon and a several time recipient of Volunteer of the Year for the Jennings County Friends of the Library. She also volunteered at the Literacy Program at the Jennings County Public Library. Mrs. Williams enjoyed quilting, sewing, volunteering at the Senior Center and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sons, John (Debbie) Williams of Valrico, Florida, Alan Williams, Mark (Dawn) Williams, Bruce (Lori) Williams and Robert (Scarlet) Williams all of North Vernon; brother, William (Wendy) Powell of North Vernon; 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Robert Powell and great-grandchildren, Zachary Halloran and Tyler Monroe.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with the Rev. David Brown officiating. Family and Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, September 15, 2017 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the New Freedom Baptist Church or Our Hospice of Jennings County.
